The course is taught by Georg Essl, a computer scientist and musician who has worked on the development of mobile phones and musical instruments.

Essl and his colleagues began to use the microphone as a sensor a few years ago, which allows applications such as Ocarina iPhone which is basically changing the phone so ancient wind instruments like the flute.

“Mobile phones are a very nice foundation for the exploration of new forms of musical performances, Essl said in a statement.

“We are not confined to the traditional physical instruments. We can do interesting activities, strange and unusual. This type of technology is still shaped the fetus, but it is a growing field and heat to use the iPhone for artistic expression,” he said.

Essl said to make one instrument on the iPhone, the students programmed the device to play back the information it receives from one of many like the sound sensor.

“The touch screen, microphone, GPS, compass, wireless sensors and accelerometer, everything, can be modified so that when using a finger to navigate around the display, blowing air into the mic, tilt or shake the phone, for example, a different voice came out,” he said
